What Is an RCI-Licensed Psychologist? A Simple Guide for India

what is rci licensed psychologist

When you look for a psychologist in India, you will often see the words "RCI licensed" or "RCI registered" on a profile. It sounds official, and it is. But few people explain what it actually means, or whether it should change who you choose.

This guide explains what the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) is, what registration involves, how to check a psychologist's registration yourself in a couple of minutes, and when it matters most for the kind of help you need.

The Short Answer

An RCI-licensed psychologist is a psychologist whose name is entered in the Central Rehabilitation Register (CRR) kept by the Rehabilitation Council of India. For clinical psychologists, this usually means they have completed an RCI-recognised professional qualification, such as an M.Phil in Clinical Psychology, with supervised clinical training. Every registered professional has a CRR number that you can check on RCI's official website.

What Is the Rehabilitation Council of India?

The Rehabilitation Council of India is a statutory body set up under the Rehabilitation Council of India Act, 1992. It works under the Government of India's Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities.

RCI has three main jobs relevant here:

  • It decides which training programmes are recognised for rehabilitation professionals, including clinical psychologists.
  • It keeps the Central Rehabilitation Register (CRR), the official list of registered professionals.
  • It sets standards for practice and continuing education.

Under the RCI Act, people who are not on the register are not entitled to practise as rehabilitation professionals in the categories RCI covers. "Clinical Psychologist" is one of those categories.

The Mental Healthcare Act, 2017 also refers to RCI when it defines who counts as a clinical psychologist in India. So for clinical psychology in particular, RCI recognition is the main formal standard.

Which Qualifications Lead to RCI Registration?

A general master's degree in psychology (M.A. or M.Sc.) does not, on its own, make someone a clinical psychologist. Clinical registration usually needs a further professional qualification recognised by RCI. The common routes are:

QualificationWhat it usually involvesRegistered as
M.Phil in Clinical PsychologyA two-year, full-time programme after a master's in psychology, with supervised clinical workClinical Psychologist
Professional Diploma in Clinical PsychologyA one-year professional programme after a master's in psychologyClinical Psychologist (Associate)
Other RCI-approved programmesRCI's list also includes programmes such as Psy.D. (Clinical Psychology) and some newer clinical master's coursesDepends on the programme

RCI also registers other psychology-related roles, such as Rehabilitation Psychologist, which have their own qualifications. The register shows each person's category and qualification, so you can see exactly what they are registered for.

RCI's list of recognised courses changes over time. If you want to confirm a specific degree, check RCI's official website rather than relying on a third-party list.

"RCI Licensed" or "RCI Registered": Is There a Difference?

In everyday use, people say "RCI licensed", "RCI registered" and "RCI certified" to mean the same thing: the professional is on the Central Rehabilitation Register. Technically, RCI registers professionals and issues a registration certificate with a CRR number.

Registration is not a one-time event. It has to be renewed periodically, and professionals earn Continuing Rehabilitation Education (CRE) points to keep their registration current. So when you check, look at whether the registration is still valid.

How to Check if a Psychologist Is RCI Registered

You can verify registration yourself, for free, in a few minutes:

  1. Ask the psychologist for their CRR number. A registered professional should share it without hesitation.
  2. Go to RCI's official registration website, rciregistration.nic.in, and open the option to search registered professionals by name or CRR number.
  3. Enter the CRR number (or their full name) and submit.
  4. Check that the name, category (for example, Clinical Psychologist) and qualification match what they told you.

Only use the official government website (ending in .nic.in) to check registration. If you can't find someone, it may be a spelling difference; ask them for their exact CRR number. If a person claims to be a clinical psychologist but cannot give a CRR number, ask why before you book.

Do Counsellors Need RCI Registration?

Not always. In India, there is currently no single statutory licence for counselling as a whole. Many well-trained counsellors hold a master's degree in psychology or counselling, work under supervision, and are not on the RCI register because they are not practising as clinical psychologists.

That is not a red flag in itself. For everyday concerns such as stress, relationship problems or adjusting to change, a qualified, supervised counsellor can be a very good fit. What matters is that the person is honest about their training and does not call themselves a "clinical psychologist" without RCI registration. When Does RCI Registration Matter for You?

It matters most when

  • You need a formal psychological assessment or diagnosis, for example for learning difficulties, ADHD, or a report for school, work or court
  • You are dealing with a diagnosed or more severe condition, such as OCD, PTSD, severe depression or an eating disorder, and want specialised therapy
  • An employer, insurer or institution specifically asks for a clinical psychologist

It may matter less when

  • You want support with stress, work pressure, relationships, loneliness or a life transition
  • You feel low or anxious but are managing daily life, and mainly want to talk things through and learn coping skills

Registration is one sign of training, not a guarantee of a good fit. Research on counselling consistently suggests that the relationship between you and your counsellor, sometimes called the therapeutic alliance, is linked to how helpful sessions feel. Experience with your concern, clear communication and feeling respected matter too.

At MindHope, every counsellor holds at least a master's degree in psychology, and some are also RCI registered. Each profile shows the counsellor's qualification and experience, so you can choose with the full picture. See our online counsellors and psychologists.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does RCI licensed mean for a psychologist?

It means the psychologist is entered in the Central Rehabilitation Register kept by the Rehabilitation Council of India, after completing an RCI-recognised qualification. Each registered professional has a CRR number.

How can I check a psychologist's RCI registration?

Ask for their CRR number, then search for it, or their full name, on RCI's official registration website, rciregistration.nic.in. Check that the name, category and qualification match.

Is an M.A. in Psychology enough for RCI registration?

Not for registration as a clinical psychologist. That usually needs a further RCI-recognised qualification, such as an M.Phil in Clinical Psychology or a Professional Diploma in Clinical Psychology. A master's in psychology is still a solid base for counselling.

Can an RCI-licensed psychologist prescribe medicine?

No. Psychologists in India, including RCI-registered clinical psychologists, cannot prescribe medication. Only medical doctors, such as psychiatrists, can.

Should I only see an RCI-licensed psychologist?

Not necessarily. For formal assessments or more severe conditions, an RCI-registered clinical psychologist is a good choice. For everyday stress, relationships or mild anxiety, a qualified, supervised counsellor can also help.

Checking credentials is a sensible step, not a sign of distrust. Good professionals welcome it.
